| Today's reliability of
fixed telecom networks is often taken for granted. Such
stability has been achieved through increasingly sophisticated
test and commissioning procedures, rigorously performed
before, during and after networks go live. However, the
role of test and commissioning has recently seen a shift
in approach. With operators choosing to use a multitude
of OEM technologies rather than aligning to one or two,
they now require commissioning engineers who understand
a diverse range of technologies and are not vendor specific. |

Greenwoods
Communications' technical services group is now fifteen times the
size it was three years ago. The downturn in the industry compelled
many operators to rationalise in-house engineers and Greenwoods has
actively built up the department to meet the growing need for multi-vendor
installation and commissioning. Greenwoods has acquired the technical
resource to provide this service and is conversant in the use of many
OEM technologies. The
Greenwoods technical services group can be divided into three departments.
The first is the 'test and commissioning' department. Working with
a full range of technologies and equipment, the team works all over
the world for a number of operators. The 'technical support' division
is comprised of a highly skilled set of engineers, who have previously
worked in technical support roles for OEMs and carriers. This team
identifies and troubleshoots problems and also lends support to test
and commissioning. The third sector of this department is 'network
support' and is involved in network rationalisation, upgrades and
optimisation. Paul Rabidas is the manager of the technical services
group.
"Greenwoods
predicted some time ago that operators would increasingly turn to
third parties for technical assistance with their test and commissioning"
commented Rabidas. "Although it was traditionally carried out by the
operators themselves, or OEMs, the market has changed over recent
years. Companies that can provide a wide range of services, across
vendor technologies are becoming increasingly important." |
